by Elozona Ogbechie on June 30, 2019

Lately, we have been seeing CBD oil everywhere. CBD can now be found in coffee, skincare and even pet treats. What is the hype really all about? Advocates are saying that CBD or cannabidiol – which comes from hemp and cannabis – is effective in pain management and anxiety.

As a good start, though, marijuana and hemp in slowly being legalized in many parts in the world. Also, just recently, we now have a first-even CBD drug approved by the FDA to treat epilepsy. Indeed, it shows some promise.

What is CBD?

An abbreviation for cannabidiol, CBD is one of the numerous cannabinoids found in cannabis and hemp. THC is the more popular chemical compound in the marijuana plant, but it is psychoactive, unlike CBD. In other words, CBD will not get you high. It is also different from medical cannabis, which has proven to reduce pain.

What Does CBD Do?

Studies have shown that CBD can help lessen anxiety among people with psychosis or schizophrenia, as well as those who are addicted to opiates. Because it has anti-inflammatory properties, CBD can also help treat acne in conjunction with conventional medication.

Experts also see some evidence that CBD can help children who suffer from epilepsy. It is for this reason why FDS recently approved a new prescription medication called Epidiolex. This drug is a formulation of CBD, which is supposed to treat severe epilepsy.

Advocates believe that there are numerous health benefits brought about by CBD, although clinicians say that more studies need to be done. They believe that cannabidiol has absolute potential, as it has shown a positive effect among opiate addicts.

One thing that is needed now to studies to give knowledge on the amount of CBD a person should consume every day as treatment for their particular illness, as well as research on how it can interact with any other medications they also might be taking.

How to Use CBD

Depending in the product, CBD can be applied topically or taken orally. There are so many products available today that incorporate CBD, from soft gels and gummies that ease anxiety to creams and bath soaks that help patients relax and keep calm.

Many of the products with cannabidiol claim to ease anxiety and pain. But whether these products contain the right amount of CBD that they advertise is still up for debate because they are not approved by the FDA. Tests have found that many of these CBD companies have unfounded health claims and do not have the CBD amount they advertised.

Is CBD Safe and Legal?

The law largely depends on where you live, and if the CBD comes from cannabis or hemp. There are some countries and states that have legalized the recreational use of cannabis, while others have only allowed its medical use. Others have introduced CBD-specific legislation.

Some places have also legalized hemp, but experts are quick to remind people that this does not mean that CBD products can now be freely sold. Consumers need to be careful about CBD products and sketchy companies making unfounded health claims.

With this is mind, it is important for consumers to scrutinize the CBD products that they buy, as well as the companies from where they buy. Also, it is essential that they first consult their doctor before taking CBD for their specific health problems.
